Santiago Bustamante

(Madison, Wisconsin, USA, 1974) He graduated in Communications at Universidad de Lima, where he was taught by Verónica Barclay, Jorge Deustua and Jaime Rázuri. At the end of the 90s he took courses with Billy Hare and Antonio Ramos in the defunct emblematic Instituto Antonio Gaudí. In 2000 he travelled to USA, and after three years of receiving individual academic counseling by photographer Stephen Shore, he obtained an MFA in Photography by the School of Visual Arts of New York (SVA). In NY, he twice received the prestigious Aaron Siskind scholarship, and he participated in several exhibitions in spaces such as the Brecht Forum and White Box gallery. In 2001, after the 9/11 attacks, he was part of the ambitious project “Here is New York” (A Democracy of Photographs) digitalization area. His work in “Here is New York” was included in the United States Library of Congress (Washington DC), the New York Historical Society Collection (NY), and in the Brooklyn Arts Council Collection (NY). In 2005, he returned to Peru as a professor at Universidad de Lima. Since then, he has participated in many individual shows both in Lima and in diverse collective exhibitions around the world. In 2010, he had a solo exhibition curated by Jorge Villacorta at Wu Galería and he also participated in Lima Photo. In 2011, his work was part of the V Auction of Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI) in the context of “Peruvian Photograph Classics, a selection by Jorge Villacorta.” In 2017, he won the Acquisition Prize in the Fifth National Salon of Photography at Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano (ICPNA). On the same year, he had an individual show, also at ICPNA, and another one at Galería Forum. In 2018, he published “Nocturnos Limeños”, photographic book edited by Fondo Editorial de la Universidad de Lima. In 2019, he participated in ARCO Madrid. Santiago Bustamante is currently represented by Forum, important Lima art gallery. His work is present in important collections: Colección de Arte Contemporáneo del Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI), Colección Jan Mulder, Colección Jorge Villacorta, Instituto Cultural Peruano – Norteamericano (ICPNA), and Fototeca Latinoamericana (FoLa, Buenos Aires).
